    Kingstone Championship play-offs – Semi-Final
Big Fellas Stadium, Saturday 28 September

Sheffield Eagles fell short of a fourth consecutive Championship Grand Final appearance after suffering a 21-12 defeat at Featherstone Rovers.

A sluggish start cost Mark Aston’s side dear, as they headed into the changing rooms at half time 21-0 behind. It was a valiant effort in the second period, but the Eagles boss admitted they left themselves too much to do.

He said: “We weren’t great in the first half. When you’re playing in big games you need to bring your A game and there were a lot of players who didn’t have their best match.

“We left ourselves a lot to do at half time but we had a dig and I’m immensely proud of how we performed in the second half. We got 12 points and I thought it was on and we were going to get there, but it wasn’t to be.”

    DONCASTER 24 EAGLES 58
Kingstone Championship play-offs – Second elimination round
    Keepmoat Stadium, Saturday 21 September

Sheffield Eagles will fly the flag for South Yorkshire in the final stages of the Championship play-offs.

And on the evidence of yesterday’s resounding 58-24 win over Doncaster, it will take a good side to prevent Mark Aston’s men retaining the trophy they won against Batley.

Not that they were ever seriously tested by a Doncaster side which, on the day, looked but a shadow of the team which finished fourth in the table.

It didn’t help that they had stand-in second-rower Liam Cunningham sent-off for kicking Michael Knowles on 26 minutes.

Although his departure, and the fact that Wilkinson was clearly carrying a dead leg, didn’t help their cause, the writing was already on the wall with Eagles leading 18-6.

Such was the quality of their play around the ruck, the power of their forwards and the pace of their back division that the Dons at their best would have struggled to contain them.

Kingstone Championship play-offs – first elimination round
    Keepmoat Stadium, Saturday 13 September

Eagles dug deep to edge out Batley Bulldogs and book a place in the second round of the play-offs.

Defences dominated and it wasn’t until the final 20 minutes that the first points were posted and tries from Etu Uaisele and Quentin Laulu-Togagae sealed the win.

It was a day when the forwards took centre stage with skipper Mitch Stringer leading by example.
The game was played at the Keepmoat and the Eagles will be back there in the next round after Doncaster lost their qualification game at Leigh.

    ROCHDALE HORNETS 16 - 58 EAGLES

A club record equalling five tries for Quentin Laulu-Togagae helped Sheffield Eagles to a convincing 16-58 win at Rochdale Hornets.

The fullback had registered his hat-trick before the interval, and crossed for two further tries in the closing six minutes to cap a five star individual performance.

Eagles coach Mark Aston said: “If you put Q on a wide, firm pitch, you will always get tries. His anticipation of where to be and when to be there is outstanding.

“He has scored 30 tries in each season he has been with the club; we’re lucky to have him and he’s tied down for the future which is great for us.”

    FEATHERSTONE ROVERS 28 - 40 EAGLES

A Kyle Briggs hat-trick led Sheffield Eagles to a fifth consecutive victory at high-flying Featherstone Rovers.

Rovers occupy second spot in the Championship but were behind from the moment Briggs crossed for his first try after 11 minutes.

The Eagles signed Briggs from Featherstone mid-season, and coach Mark Aston was delighted to see the stand-off run riot on his old stomping ground.

He said: “Kyle is a champion and we’re lucky to have him.

“He’s got that bit of class and composure; for him to come here and score three tries on a ground where he has had so many great years is special for him.

“He has been great for us and a huge influence on our form at the back end of the season.”

Eagles produced some thrilling attacking rugby as they cruised past relegated Rochdale with Cory Aston scoring a hat-trick of tries.

The final home league game was switched to the University’s Sports Park to take advantage of the floodlights. A bonus was the big pitch that suited the Eagles expansive attacking style.
