It was costly with the team slipping down the Championship table to seventh – above the Cougars only on points difference.

Back row forward Michael Knowles and centre Menzie Yere battled away but a try after only 29 seconds wasn’t built on and the momentum was lost.

There weren’t many tries and plenty of mistakes by both team but in the sun and battling up Batley’s famous sloping pitch in the second half the Eagles kept a tight grip on a narrow lead.

Prop Eddie Battye in for his first game since being injured in the Grand Final win over Batley last year brought a bustle and urgency on a day when stamina was tested.

Back row forwards Matt Garside, Michael Knowles and stand-off Patch Walker worked hard in a tense clash.

Coach Mark Aston was proud of the way his team challenged Castleford particularly in the second half.

“We gave it a dig, Castleford play an exciting brand of football and it’s not easy,” he said. “But we had a go and we can take confidence from that.”
