    Eagles’ hopes of extending their run of wins in the league to three crashed with defeat to Keighley.

    It was costly with the team slipping down the Championship table to seventh – above the Cougars only on points difference.

    Back row forward Michael Knowles and centre Menzie Yere battled away but a try after only 29 seconds wasn’t built on and the momentum was lost.

    Prop Theo Gonzales-Trique, on loan from French champions Toulouse Olympique, made his debut off the bench replacing the injured Ben Jones.

    Eagles staged a late charge to take to gain their sixth away win and a league double over Dewsbury.

    Patch Walker back at his former club had a big say in the two tries that put the Eagles into the lead and finished off the revival with a touchdown.

    It was a day for happy returns with Eagles including five former Rams in the 17 – Walker, Dominic Brambani, Scott Turner, Tom Lillycrop and Ben Jones.

    There were thrills and a finish that was a bit too close with the Eagles allowing an 18 point lead almost to evaporate in the sun as they gave away a string of penalties and had a man sin binned.

    Eagles came agonisingly close to snatching a vital win at Whitehaven.

    Two tries from centre Menie Yere to bring his points total for the club to 500 had given the Eagles a lead but they slipped behind on the stroke of half-time.

    In the final 40 minutes they struggled to take control until a late surge narrowed the margin to two points but time ran out.

    Coach Mark Aston kept his pledge to shake up the Eagles after the home defeat to Leigh with young forwards Alex Palmer and Jack Blagbrough plus Cory Aston coming in with Gareth Owen starting at hooker.

    Eagles kept up their record of bouncing back from a home defeat with a win away as they put in a massive defensive performance to earn a crucial victory at Batley Bulldogs.

    There weren’t many tries and plenty of mistakes by both team but in the sun and battling up Batley’s famous sloping pitch in the second half the Eagles kept a tight grip on a narrow lead.

    Prop Eddie Battye in for his first game since being injured in the Grand Final win over Batley last year brought a bustle and urgency on a day when stamina was tested.

    Back row forwards Matt Garside, Michael Knowles and stand-off Patch Walker worked hard in a tense clash.

    Both teams needing a win – Batley are in the relegations places and Eagles were disappointed by the home defeat the Featherstone.

    Eagles saw a 22-10 half-time lead slip away as they struggled to get into the game in the final 40 minutes.

    Rovers sent Eagles to their third league defeat in four games since the return to Owlerton.

    Some of referee Joe Cobb’s decisions and a 14-6 penalty count didn’t help but Eagles couldn’t respond as Featherstone took control.

    Sheffield Eagles took a 60-16 mauling from Castleford Tigers as they were put out of the Challenge Cup.

    An injury-hit Eagles kept battling with fullback Quentin Laulu-Togagae providing a threat coming into the line but they couldn't match the power of the team second in the Super League in the fifth round game at the Mend-A-Hose Jungle.

    Coach Mark Aston was proud of the way his team challenged Castleford particularly in the second half.

    “We gave it a dig, Castleford play an exciting brand of football and it’s not easy,” he said. “But we had a go and we can take confidence from that.”

    The teams last met in the Challenge Cup in 1998 when the Eagles were on their way to Wembley and hopes of an upset were sparked as Dominic Brambani and Laulu-Tagagae sent in winger Scott Turner after only three minutes.
